Blood community urges White House to issue national blood donor month proclamation

Dec. 14, 2022
Letter from the blood community.

AABB, America’s Blood Centers (ABC) and the American Red Cross (ARC) urged the Administration to help raise awareness of the continuous need for blood by issuing a Presidential Proclamation for National Blood Donor Month (NBDM) this January. The organizations also submitted suggested proclamation language for White House consideration.

In the letter, AABB, ABC and ARC emphasized that a presidential NBDM proclamation – first issued by President Richard Nixon in 1969 – would be a valuable educational tool to highlight how donating blood is an important act of public service.  Such a proclamation would help America’s blood donation community at a critical time, the organizations said. “It is expected that most centers will have just one- or two-days’ worth of blood available during the month of January.”
