careviso survey highlights patient frustration with healthcare cost transparency and prior authorization delays

careviso announced the results of a new survey that underscores growing patient frustration with inaccurate cost estimates, unexpected medical bills, and prior authorization delays.

The online survey, which was presented to 2,500 diverse patients across the U.S., highlights a strong demand for digital tools that provide real-time cost transparency and a more seamless healthcare experience. 

According to the survey, nearly half (45%) of respondents reported difficulty obtaining accurate cost estimates before receiving care, and 63% were ultimately billed more than their initial estimate. A significant majority (73%) expressed a strong interest in using a digital tool for real-time healthcare cost estimates. Additionally, 81% of patients indicated that prior authorization requirements negatively impact their ability to receive timely care, further illustrating the administrative burdens patients face when accessing healthcare. 

Price transparency remains an important factor in provider selection, with 64% of respondents considering it “very important” when choosing a healthcare provider. Among patients who typically receive cost estimates from their healthcare provider, 97.5% experienced unexpected medical costs, while 75% found that their estimated cost was actually higher than their final bill. Every respondent in this group—100%—stated that price transparency is crucial when selecting a healthcare provider and that they would definitely use a digital tool to estimate healthcare costs in real time before treatment. However, only 25% of patients in this category reported improved satisfaction with healthcare price transparency and prior authorization processes compared to late 2024.
