The first critical case of H5N1 bird flu in the United States was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The patient was hospitalized in Louisiana.
There have been 61 confirmed cases of bird flu in the U.S. since April of this year, according to a CDC release. Additionally, “This is the first case of H5N1 bird flu in the U.S. that has been linked to exposure to a backyard flock.” Data indicated that the patient has the D1.1 genotype.
Currently, the CDC has not changed their previous public health risk assessment. No person-to-person contamination has been identified yet.
