Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania researchers found that long COVID can lead to an assortment of health issues in young patients.
Key findings from their studies:
- Individuals under 21 years of age had a higher risk of kidney problems post-COVID. Specifically, they had a 17% higher risk of chronic kidney disease diagnosis at stage 2 or higher, according to a release. For stage 3 or higher, they had a 35% higher risk. For those that already had kidney disease, the risk of “developing any of several other kidney-related adverse outcomes” was 15% higher.
- Pediatric patients with COVID had a 25% higher risk of developing gastrointestinal issues than those who did not have COVID. That risk jumped to 28% “in the “chronic phase” from six months to two years after the SARS-CoV-2 test.”
- Children have an increased cardiovascular risk post-COVID.
- Certain racial and ethnic groups had higher risk of developing long-COVID.
