Millions of people don’t know they have diabetes

April 9, 2025

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) published an 11th edition of their Diabetes Atlas displaying the latest diabetes findings. IDF shared some of the data in a release.

Currently, more adults are living with diabetes “than the population of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean combined.” According to IDF, out of the estimated 589 million adults living with diabetes, nearly half (252 million) of them are undiagnosed. The organization projects that adult diabetes cases will jump to 853 in the next 25 years.

Additional findings suggest that most diabetes patients have type 2 diabetes (90%). They “are at 84% higher risk of heart failure than people who do not have the condition.”

Living with undiagnosed diabetes is dangerous. Many patients will be unaware of their disease until “they already have one or more of the associated complications and have missed opportunities to prevent or delay their onset.” IDF calls for updated strategies to prevent, diagnose, and treat diabetes.
