Joint Commission to improve accreditation and certification for children’s hospitals

Aug. 4, 2025

The Joint Commission has devised a new strategy to improve accreditation and certification for children’s hospitals, according to an announcement. The goal of this action is to “remove and/or revise inapplicable standards to better suit the circumstances of these organizations.”

The new Children’s Healthcare Advisory Committee put together by the Joint Commission will help update the standards. According to the Joint Commission, Michelle Riley-Brown, MHA, FACHE, president and CEO of Children’s National Hospital and Michael Anderson, MD, pediatric intensivist and former CEO of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital will head the Committee.

The new standards will differentiate between the care needs of children vs adults. Additionally, The Committee will investigate how to improve children’s healthcare through accreditation and certification by “supporting their development to family-centered practices,” and serving “as a national forum for thought leadership, policy innovation, and clinical insight.”
