Millions affected by Change Healthcare cyberattack

UnitedHealth provided TechCrunch with the news.

According to TechCrunch, precisely 190 million Americans have been affected by the Change Healthcare cyberattack in February 2023. UnitedHealth confirmed this.

Most of the affected have already been notified, according to Tyler Mason, a spokesperson for UnitedHealth Group in an email to TechCrunch. Mason assured that they will notify the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) with a final number later.

TechCrunch’s release reported that “UnitedHealth’s spokesperson said the company was ‘not aware of any misuse of individuals’ information as a result of this incident and has not seen electronic medical record databases appear in the data during the analysis.’”

Large amounts of individuals’ health and insurance information was stolen and, in some cases, published online due to the attack. “Change Healthcare subsequently paid at least two ransoms to prevent further publication of the stolen files.”

Originally thought to be 100 million affected, 190 million is almost double.
