Jan. 7, 2025
Public risk of the disease is still low at this time.

$306 million was awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to various departments and organizations for H5N1 avian flu response.

On December 31, the National Institutes of Health released a risk assessment of H5N1. It said H5N1 risk is still low for the general public and experts recommended continuing developing treatment and prevention.

According to an HHS release, $183 million will be awarded by ASPR “for regional, state and local preparedness programs.” Additionally, $111 million will be awarded by CDC “For additional enhancements to our ability to monitor H5N1 at the local, state and national levels.” $11 million from NIH will go toward “additional research into potential medical countermeasures for H5N1.”
