Connection found between smoking cessation and additional addiction recovery

Aug. 15, 2025

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently discovered evidence that ceasing smoking cigarettes helps adults recover from other substance use disorders. The findings are reported in a release.

The NIH investigated adults’ data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. Findings showed that the chances of a patient recovering from addictions that are not tobacco related jumped 42% when they quit smoking cigarettes.

National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) leadership emphasized the significance of this discovery. Director Nora Volkow, M.D. said, “It underscores the importance of addressing different addictions together, rather than in isolation.”
