A recently published study analyzed 2013-2022 incidences of invasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections in 10 U.S. states.
Infections trended higher in older adults aged over 65, American Indian or Alaska Native people, those living in long-term care, people who were experiencing homelessness, and those who inject drugs, according to the study.
Additionally, “nonsusceptibility of isolates to macrolides and clindamycin increased substantially.” 21,312 cases were studied. Just under 10% died. Most patients were 16-64.
The authors call for improved prevention and control strategies.
