A new World Health Organization (WHO) study revealed that many women aren’t receiving necessary maternal care globally. One mother died every two minutes from pregnancy and maternal related complications in 2020, according to a release.
In 2020, 80,000 and 50,000 maternal deaths from hemorrhage, and hypertensive disorders like preeclampsia were reported, according to WHO. Additionally, “other health conditions, including both infectious and chronic diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, anemias, and diabetes, underpin nearly a quarter (23%) of pregnancy and childbirth-related mortality.”
WHO calls for better maternal care and diagnostics. “After childbirth, many women struggle to access follow-up care, including mental health support.”
WHO announced that World Health Day 2025 “will focus on maternal and newborn health.” Overall maternal deaths from 2000-2023 will be released in April.
The study is published in Lancet Global Health.
