Adults who are hospitalized with severe illness are at higher risk for heart failure, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
A new study of 14,468 middle aged adults who had no heart failure found “that individuals who experienced an infection-related hospitalization had a 2.35 times higher risk of developing heart failure at an average time of seven years after surviving the hospitalization, compared to those who did not get an infection.” Participants were followed for 31 years. Heart failure risk was equally greater, no matter what infection the participant was hospitalized for.
The study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
