The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published its 2023 National and State Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) Progress Report.

The 2023 National and State HAI Progress Report provides data on central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), ventilator-associated events (VAEs), surgical site infections (SSIs), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream events, and Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) events

On a national level among acute care hospitals, overall CLABSI, CAUTI, VAE, and MRSA infections declined compared to 2022 data, but CAUTI and MRSA are below pre-pandemic rates.

Additional data:

·       CLABSI decreased in all locations: ICU (20%), NICU (13%), and Wards (8%).

·       CAUTI decreased across ICU locations (16%) and Ward locations (8%).

·       VAE decreased 5% in ICU locations but increased 9% in Ward locations.

·       SSI combined Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) procedures increased by 3%.
