New findings from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center show that certain breast cancer patients may not need surgery.
The findings come from five years of a Phase II trial that 50 women over 40 with early-stage triple-negative or HER2-positive breast cancer participated in. According to a release, “breast cancer still had not returned in patients who had a pathologic complete response (pCR) after chemotherapy and radiation, without surgery.” Processes called “selective image-guided vacuum-assisted core biopsy (VACB) and stringent histologic processing” can help identify who needs surgery.
The study is published in JAMA Oncology. The trial is still ongoing and will now include 100 participants.
