Millions of children dead due to antimicrobial resistance in 2022
A new study analyzed antimicrobial resistance (AMR) related deaths in children in 2022.
AMR was associated with 3 million children’s deaths in 2022. CIDRAP reported on the study, citing the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and the University of Melbourne, “Nearly half of the deaths from AMR-related complications were in children in Southeast Asia and Africa, and many were linked to the use of antibiotics that aren't intended for first-line treatment.” Data from 83 countries was analyzed for the study.
Additionally, use of Watch and Reserve antibiotics drastically increased at the time in Southeast Asia and Africa. CIDRAP said, “more than 2 million AMR-associated pediatric deaths in 2022 were associated with Watch and Reserve antibiotics.”
