Medical lab accreditation for ISO 15189
This
organization’s ISO 15189 medical laboratory accreditation
is based on a thorough assessment of a medical laboratory’s
performance, including procedures, staff competence, and reporting.
The accreditation process includes a review of management systems,
in addition to examining the technical aspects of a laboratory’s
operation. Results from proficiency testing are an indication of a
laboratory’s competence and are an integral part of the assessment
and accreditation process. ISO 15189 is the management-system-based
standard for medical-testing laboratories that can result in higher
productivity and efficiency. To assist laboratories in preparing for
accreditation to ISO 15189, training courses in preparation and
implementation of the quality-management system and technical
aspects of the standard are also available.

Virology Manual, 4th ed., is the definitive source of the
latest information and procedures for the clinical laboratory
virologist. This edition includes 34 chapters and two appendices,
each thoroughly revised and updated by noted experts. These updates
address the modernization of clinical virology and new developments
in the field, with an emphasis on molecular diagnostics. The book
also includes material on several recently described viruses
including human metapneumovirus, West Nile virus, bocaviruses, and
newer influenza viruses and adenoviruses, plus a broadened focus on
papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses. This book details laboratory
procedures for detecting and handling viruses, from specimen
requirements and quality assurance to virus detection and
identification, from the fundamentals through the latest molecular
methods.

Study guide for MLT/MT exams
The
Board of Registry Study Guide for Clinical Laboratory Certification
Examinations, 5th ed. — an authoritative study tool for
preparing for the ASCP Board of Registry (BOR) medical technologist
(MT) and medical technician (MLT) certification examinations —
contains more than 2,000 multiple-choice questions. Unique to this
study guide is the differentiation of questions appropriate for both
MLT and MT levels. The questions in this edition are arranged in
chapters that correspond to the major content areas on the
examination. Within each chapter, the questions are grouped by
topic, including new sections on molecular pathology, lab
information, and safety. New to this edition are short answer
explanations and references for each practice question. Questions
and answers are included for every key laboratory specialty — blood
bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology, operations, microbiology,
molecular pathology, urinalysis, and body fluids.

Med lab assistant certificate program
A
new
Certification for Medical Laboratory Assistants Program is
available for practitioners who assist and perform tasks associated
with routine testing in a clinical laboratory setting. The
certification exam, which is administered online at any one of the
many Pearson VUE testing centers located throughout the United
States, focuses on verifying knowledge needed to perform basic
laboratory tasks (e.g., quality improvement, laboratory safety,
procedures, practice standards, and regulatory requirements). Once
certified by this organization, medical laboratory assistants will
need to document activities attesting to their ongoing competency
every three years.

Distance learning
Register
by Sept. 1 to join a
laboratory personnel education collaboration created in
response to the ongoing critical shortages of qualified lab
professionals nationwide. Past records of the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics indicated 12,400 medical lab employees would be needed
from 2002 through 2010. Less than half of needed lab personnel are
graduating. This large reference lab and Weber State University have
partnered to promote and facilitate education for MTs and MLTs. This
distance-learning curriculum gives client labs an opportunity to
educate personnel without removing them from their work sites.
Students can access courses online anytime and can utilize the
resource of their respective work facilities to successfully
complete required competencies.
