One-piece, instrument-compatible microtube

BD Diagnostics: One-piece, instrument-compatible microtubeThe BD Microtainer MAP Microtube for automated process for hematology testing is designed to improve the safety, accuracy, and turnaround time of capillary-blood collection and testing in patients with veins that can be difficult to access, such as infants, children, oncology patients, and the elderly. The microtube with integrated collector is fully compatible with most automated hematology instruments and can run in automated mode with smaller blood volume. The low-volume collection system accommodates standard, full-size patient identification labels, thus reducing the risk of labeling errors. The tube enables automated processing with 81% less blood than venous systems. A twist-assist closure makes for easier cap removal, snaps closed, and ensures safe leak-free transportation to the lab.

Visual reference for sample volume

Vacuette Coagulation Blood Collection Tube Labels give a visual reference to ensure sample volume is within the fill range. By having a visual reference on every tube, labs can eliminate quality-not-sufficient (QNS) samples and the need to re-draw patients, which helps to reduce costs associated with QNS samples and patient re-draws, as well as to improve the quality of samples and reported results. It is critical that coagulation tubes be filled to at least 90% of the stated capacity to prevent inaccurate diagnosis. Phlebotomists can verify fill-volume guide cards by referencing the tube label at the time of collection, instead of fill volume guide cards.

Minimize mislabeling while enhancing safety

A new line of blood-bag labels, the 8000T, are available to support the ISBT standard and are designed to enhance patient safety in the blood-transfusion process. Made with a polypropylene face sheet, the 8000T primary blood- bag labels have a durable, acrylic-based adhesive that meets FDA requirements. The strong adhesion and pliability enables them to easily and securely conform to the shape of the blood bag, helping ensure ease in scanning and higher bar-code read rates. Blood-bag labels are a key component in improving patient safety throughout the blood-transfusion process. Designed for use with this company’s thermal transfer printers.

Pink cap for easy ID

Added to this company’s product assortment is the new 4-mL, 13 x 75-mm, K2EDTA blood collection tube with a pink cap for rapid and easy identification as a blood-bank tube. Pink-capped tubes make it easy for diagnostic laboratories to quickly locate and process results among the many tubes moving through the lab on a daily basis. It is imperative that blood-bank tubes are processed quickly and accurately to ensure a cross match for patients in transfusion therapy or transplant medicine. Tubes are available through laboratory distributers everywhere.

Manage blood-donation systems

The PRISM Director is a computer system that enhances laboratory efficiency by managing test data for single or multiple PRISM systems used to screen donated blood for hepatitis and retroviruses. In addition to managing data, this system offers laboratories the ability to track and trend quality control and performance of blood-screening assays and gives laboratory personnel more robust data-backup capabilities through expanded archival features. The system helps blood-screening laboratories not only better manage re-testing of samples but also produce custom reports and generate statistical charts to improve workflow.

Enhance safety initiatives

Transfusion Manager is a bedside point-of-care blood-administration system that enhances patient-safety initiatives. The device will positively identify the correct patient and units of blood or components, verify the product about to be transfused is designated for that patient, and document the procedure from start to finish, including vital signs and any signs of possible transfusion reaction. Used in conjunction with Blood Bank and Collection Manager offered by this company, the Transfusion Manager creates a closed-loop transfusion-management system in support of its Five Rights of Laboratory Testing.

Dependable storage

A complete package of energy-efficient blood-plasma walk-in panels and refrigeration systems that create a consistent -40°F environment for rapid freezing and dependable storage are available. When storing blood plasma, the proper environment to rapidly freeze and store is absolutely critical to its preservation. Maintaining the exact temperature range required by the FDA is easy with a reliable storage enclosure and a heavy-duty refrigeration system. A three-part refrigeration system consists of an ante-room, surrounded with a plasma freezer and a storage freezer on either side. The ante-room reduces ice formations in the freezers by providing a barrier between ambient air and the -40°F freezer conditions, and the storage freezer keeps the plasma at the required low temperatures.

Automated PFH

An in vitro diagnostic DiscretPak Plasma-free Hemoglobin (PFH) reagent test kit for automated analyzers is available. Made specifically for widely used discrete chemistry analyzers, this multipurpose, automated PFH method removes much of the imprecision of current manual tests. For high-volumes, 125-mL to 1,000-mL sizes are available; for low-volumes, 25 mL to 50 mL; all methods require only a single reagent. Reagents are formulated mainly as stable liquid but can be formulated as dry blends. It takes only three to five minutes to dissolve all DiscretPak reagents. Extended linearity provides for reductions in repeat rates; and minimizes manual sample dilutions and attendant potential for introducing errors, analytical and clerical labor, and additional supplies.

Shorten TAT for blood-bank samples

The StatSpin Express 3 High-Speed Centrifuge shortens turnaround time for blood typing and screening by seven to eight minutes. It spins at 7,200 rpm and provides quality samples in only two minutes compared to traditional equipment that takes a minimum of 10 minutes. With just three settings, the StatSpin Express 3 is simple to use. Select two-, three-, or five-minute button and press "start." The unit "beeps" when spinning stops. The lid remains locked, for safety's sake, until the rotor comes to a complete stop. Process as many as eight samples at once in tubes from 1.5 mL to 10 mL in size.
